Overview

NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta is a Windows-based client application that communicates with the NewsEdge LAN Server to provide personalized, real-time scrolling news. You can launch NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta from within any Reuters Application Environment (RACE) compliant application, or run it in standalone mode from your desktop.

Features

NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta features include:

Non-Multiple Document Interface (NMDI)Floating toolbar, multiple view windows, and Alert Banners can be placed strategically around the desktop.

Multiple Document Interface (MDI) Single application frame contains fixed toolbar and moveable view windows. Floating Alert Banners can be launched from the toolbar.

Following are some restrictions and known problems that exist in NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta:

System Requirements

This section describes the client hardware and client software required for NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta.

Client Hardware

– 16MB of RAM for Microsoft Windows 95 or 98

– 32MB of RAM for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation

Client Software

– Microsoft Windows 95 or 98 (for standalone mode only)

– Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation (for RACE-compliant and standalone modes)

Note: Refer to the documentation included with your RACE-compliant application for complete software requirements.

Installing NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta

To install NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta:

  1. Insert the NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta CD. The CD contains the following files:

Live50.exe

The installation program for using NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta in standalone mode only.

Live50D.exe

Debug version of the NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta installation program (standalone).

LiveReuters50.exe

The installation program for using NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta in the RACE application environment.

LiveReuters50D.exe

Debug version of the NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta installation program (RACE).

  1. Click Start and click Run. From the Run menu, select LiveReuters50.exe and click OK to begin the installation.

  2. Proceed through the installation screens until you reach the User Information screen. Type in your Name and Company, and Serial Number provided to you for this release.

  3. Proceed to the Setup Type screen, and choose Custom. As you check off the components you want to install, scroll down to select NSI.

Note: If you have any version of NewsEdge Live installed, your old NSI initialization file is saved as Nsi.old, and a new Nsi.ini file is created.

  1. Proceed to the Select Component screen and select NSI 3.2.1 or NSI 4.1, depending on the NewsEdge Server version to which you are connecting.

  2. Proceed through the remaining installation screens.

The program is installed in C:\Program Files\NewsEdge\Live by default, or in the folder you selected in the Choose Destination Location screen.

In the Select Components screen, select TCP/IP DATAGRAM or TCP/IP Session.

Using NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta

This section describes how to

To run NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta in standalone mode:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to NewsEdge Live (or the program group you created during the installation), and click one of the following programs:

NELiveM.exe – Starts a floating toolbar and view window with scrolling headlines. Multiple windows containing headline searches, stories, and quotes can be sized and positioned around the desktop. Floating alert banners visually and audibly notify you as alert stories arrive. Note: This mode is the initial default for launching NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta from your RACE-compliant application.

NELiveN.exe – Starts a single application frame with multiple view windows and a fixed toolbar. Multiple headline, story, and quote view windows can be sized and positioned within the application frame. Floating alert banners visually and audibly notify you as alert stories arrive.

  1. Run both applications (separately or at the same time) to evaluate the application that best suits your needs.

To change the default mode for launching NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta from a RACE-compliant application:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to the program group you created for NewsEdge Live, and click Live MDI or Live NMDI.

  2. Run the version you want to set as the default mode, and then exit the application. The last application to be running becomes the default mode for your RACE-compliant application.

To launch NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta from a RACE-compliant application:

Right-click on one or more selected RIC codes, and click NewsEdge. The Headline View appears with a search on the selected companies.

Removing NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta

If you want to remove NewsEdge Live 5.0 Beta, perform the following steps:

  1. Open the Control Panel, and select Add/Remove Programs.

  2. From the Install/Uninstall tab, select NewsEdge Live, and click Add/Remove. The program is automatically removed from the system.

Problem Reporting

This Beta release is available only for internal NewsEdge Corporation testing and limited customer evaluation. NewsEdge has verified the basic functionality of the software, but has not tested it to the rigorous standards of a released product.
